China warns the US president not to meet with
the Dalai Lama as it will harm ties between the two counties.
According to the White House though, Barack Obma intends to meet
the Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama is the head of Tibetans in exile.
Talks between China and the Dalai Lama’s representatives have
yielded little progress.
Chinese Communist Party official Zhu Weigun said about the meeting:
"It will seriously undermine the foundations of Sino-US political
relations." Mr Zhu also said: "If [the meeting] does happen we will
take corresponding action to make relevant countries see their
mistakes," he said.
These comments come straight after a disagreement between China and
the US about the sale of American military equipment worth $6.4bn
to Taiwan, an island China considers its own.
The meetings between China and the Tibetans are still divided, this
being nothing new according to Mr Zhu. In the meetings the Tibetans
again went over their hopes for the introduction of greater freedom
in the Himalayan region.
