Freshers Week
Freshers week is fantastic opportunity to get to know loads of new
people and you'll probably meet friends you'll be living and
studying with for the next 3 or 4 years. As brilliant as it all
sounds, some people can find this week quite a scary experience. It
can be quite daunting suddenly being parent-free and on your own in
halls, BUT…
…Resist the temptation to hide in your room with your teddy bear
clutching photos of friends and family. This is a time to get out
there and meet people. Be confident and talk to everybody, remember
they are in the same boat as you and are probably equally
terrified.
Smile
Remember to just be yourself. It's inevitable that you will gel
with some people and not with others, it's only natural. Be
genuine, smile and you'll have a great time. It's always a good
idea to unpack your stereo and kettle first, get some great music
going and invite your neighbour for a cuppa - you will soon find
your room buzzing with people and be suffering a shortage of mugs.
I remember one girl brought in a homemade chocolate cake our first
day…needless to say she proved to be an instant hit with
everyone!
Freshers' Fayre
Most Universities have a freshers' fayre, which is designed to
introduce you to what your Uni has to offer. You will find all the
Uni clubs and societies are there vying for your membership,
bribing you to join with shots of tequila, free pens, stress balls
and other useless but brilliantly free stuff.
My one bit of advice is don't sign up for everything. Resist that
temptation to be a member of every society going. For one, joining
loads of societies can cost you a shed load of cash and you won't
have the time to do everything anyway. Check out what there is and
make an informed decision. But it is a good idea to sign up to one
or two, it's a great way of meeting people with the same interests
as you, which can only be a good thing.
There'll also be banks and insurance companies there, so it can be
a good time to sort out boring (but important!) things like that.
Once again shop around, get as many freebies as you can and enjoy
yourself!
It's Party time!
Get to as many events as you can - I know this may prove expensive
but it is worth it, and freshers week only happens once after all.
Events such as hall parties and the freshers ball are great ways to
meet people. Also, get out there and invite your fellow corridor
mates to go with you, remember they may want to go but are too
scared to ask.
So far we have shied away from the 'drunken fresher sexual
disaster'. Now this may be applicable to some and not others, but
it just makes sense to give it a mention. All that needs to be said
is: Be careful, you may have to see that person around uni for the
next three years, so choose carefully and always use a condom. Goes
without saying really.
Beers and Booze
It can be all too easy to become submerged in the heavy drinking
culture of freshers week. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong
with a bit of boozing and a few drunken antics, but try not to be
the one that has to be carried home in the middle of the evening
unable to stand up. There are more pleasant things then waking up
with a kebab lying on your pillow with chilli sauce up your nose.
It's just not pretty.
Lectures
These are rare during the first week but if your course does have
them make sure you go to them! These are important and will tell
you what you'll be up to for the rest of the year. Start how you
mean to go on!
Freshers week is a momentous occasion and one which should not be
wasted. Go out there, do your stuff and have fun!
