Harry Potter plagiarism! Absurd says JK Rowling

JK Rowling today hits back at claims of plagiarism against her Harry Potter books as ”absurd” and “unfounded”.

Yesterday the multi-millionaire writer was named in a lawsuit claiming she stole ideas from another British author for her tales about the teenage wizard.

There is an ongoing law suite going on. The estate of the late Adrian Jacobs is suing Rowling’s publisher ‘Bloomsbury Publishing PLC’ for copyright infringement. Rowling was added as a defendant.

Adrian Jacobs representatives claim Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire book copied a number of ideas from of one of Jacobs' books about ‘The Adventures Of Willy the Wizard No 1: Livid Land’.

Rowling hit back today saying she had never heard of Jacobs, let alone read the book.

JK is applying to the court to have the case dismissed for holding no merit.

She said: "I am saddened that yet another claim has been made that I have taken material from another source to write Harry. The fact is I had never heard of the author or the book before the first accusation by those connected to the author's estate in 2004; I have certainly never read the book. The claims that are made are not only unfounded but absurd and I am disappointed that I, and my UK publisher Bloomsbury, are put in a position to have to defend ourselves. We will be applying to the Court immediately for a ruling that the claim is without merit and should therefore be dismissed without delay".

Max Markson, a Sydney agent who represents Paul Allen, the trustee of the estate of the writer, who died in 1997, said: "I estimate it's a billion-dollar case”. He also said that the estate was seeking legal advice as to whether the Harry Potter films and soon to be opened Harry Potter theme park breached copyright law.

The claims by Jacobs estate were first made in 2004 and Bloomsbury denied the allegations, calling them “unfounded and untrue”.

Bloomsbury has always said it was unable to identify any similarities between the text of the Jacobs and Rowlings book.

We ran a typical Dell vostro 1710 battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.
