Get outdoors and dirty with WRG!
Mud, scrub-bashing, dumper truck driving, demolition and
restoration!
Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) has launched its new programme of
unique weeklong residential volunteering opportunities, known as
‘Canal Camps’ designed to restore the derelict canals of England
and Wales to their former glory. Canal Camps give you the chance to
do your bit for the environment whilst having a fun
holiday.
Mike Palmer, WRG Chairman, explains: “This year we have a great
selection of locations for our Canal Camps, including the
reappearance of some old favourites, such as the Basingstoke and
the Cotswolds canals.”
There are 25 Canal Camps this year, to which volunteers
are invited to get their hands dirty and try something completely
different. Some of the tasks lined up this year include, completing
the restoration of ‘Steppingstone’s Bridge’ near Swindon on the
Wilts and Berks Canal, the continuing excavation, restoration and
rebuilding of Gough’s Orchard Lock on the Cotswold Canals and a new
addition; working on the clearance of Pewsham Lock in
Wiltshire.
It’s a totally unique
volunteering opportunity and participants can learn loads of new
skills to impress future employers, as well as the chance to be
part of the team that really make a huge difference to the
waterways. Amazingly, the holiday only costs £7 per day for each
volunteer!
That’s only £49 for a week, as a contribution towards the cost of
all meals and accommodation. WRG welcomes anyone interested in
contributing to the restoration projects to come and join them for
a week and celebrate in their success. Volunteers need no previous
experience; all they require is a willingness to get involved and a
good sense of fun.
