IT’S A SMURF WAR BOYO!

Update They Did It!

The city of Swansea has broken the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed up as Smurfs. A total of 2,510 people were in costume as the Belgian cartoon characters got together at the Oceana nightclub for the event organised by Jokers' Masquerade, Wales Online reports. Store employee Rebecca Oatley said: "'Smurf Guinness World Record' holder has become an illustrious title. "We knew that if we were going to break the record, we had to do it in style and 2,510 Smurfs will be a tough act to follow for any budding record breakers." The Welsh city more than doubled the previous record of 1,253 Smurfs which was recorded by Castleblayney in County Monaghan, Ireland last year.

Welsh City Will Turn Blue on 8th June as Swansea University and
Jokers’ Masquerade Get Serious About Smurf Guinness World Record

Newbury, UK: 28th May 2009: A bizarre sight will greet visitors to Swansea City Centre on 8th June as over 2500 students will literally turn blue to get into the record books.

It may sound like a joke, but students from Swansea are very serious about smashing the Guinness World Record™ for the most people dressed as Smurfs, following attempts by four other UK Universities.

Jokers’ Masquerade has supplied the cash strapped Swansea students with over 3000 blue gnome costumes for the gathering which will take place at the Oceana nightclub at 10pm on Monday 8th June. The Swansea Smurf attempt is the latest little white glove to be thrown down in the on-going “Smurf Wars”, as students across the country vie for the illustrious Smurf Record.

The Guinness World Record is currently held by the town of Castleblayney in County Monaghan, Northern Ireland which last year recorded 1253 Smurfs gathered in the High Street.

“There have been five attempts in the last 18 months, and the record has risen from 300 to 1253 in that time” says Rebecca Oatley from Jokers’ Masquerade. “When we were approached by Swansea University to help them break the record, and we agreed that if we are going to do it, we need to really set the standard. That’s why we have given the University 3000 costumes (Smurf and Smurfette) and we’re expecting at least 2,500 students to take part.”

“It’s a Smurf War,” says Hannah Lamden of the University’s Students Union. “Bath, Southampton, Chester and Portsmouth University have all tried but we’re going to make sure that no student is left un-blue. We want our record to stay in the Guinness Book for years to come.”

To make sure that every Smurf qualifies for the record, students must appear as if they are blue with no “natural” skin showing.
