1. Join
everything
Music club, drama club, film club; use them for getting to know new
people.
2. Don't drop people you
know from home
At least not straight away. You may welcome a familiar figure in a
sea of unfamiliar faces.
3. Don't put all your
social eggs in one basket
Avoid getting too "in" with one crowd right from the start; you
might grow out of them (or they you).
4. Get a
diary
And make dates to do things; don't let your week become shapeless;
find something regular to do (eg Monday night is darts night).
5. Get real (ie off
campus)
Go to non-studenty places and mix with people who do ordinary jobs.
Don't lose touch with the outside world.
6. Get yourself a
flattering mirror
If you've got confidence, fellow first-years will flock round
you.
7. Don't go home every
weekend
It's running away and it panics your parents.
8. Don't get drunk more
than once ( or twice ;) ) a week
Making a habit of getting plastered gives you the status not of
hero, but of saddo.
9. Do
wash
Many other people do, and they will be able to smell if you
don't.
10. Keep the
booklet
Don't throw away the student welfare booklet. It has useful numbers
in it.
